We’ve got a special treat lined up for our Zama yogis for November’s 90 minute monthly master class on Saturday 7th November at 4:10pm: pratyahara, which means to withdraw the senses. In the ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the eight limbs of yoga are outlined, which includes both internal and external limbs, like asana (yoga postures), meditation and pranayama. The fifth limb, pratyahara, is described as “the conscious withdrawal of energy from the senses” – which, although its meaning sounds quite puzzling, is a way to find a space of silence in a world of distractions.
One example of the sensations of pratyahara is savasana (corpse pose) – as you settle into this posture at the end of class, you often experience the feeling of tuning out both mentally and physically as you completely relax and surrender to the sensations of the body and mind.
For this master class, we will be inducing pratyahara by reducing physical stimulus, and then honing in and concentrating on just one sense (such as hearing). We’ll be wearing blindfolds to block our sight, and inspiring the mind to turn inwards and focus in many different ways than your yoga practice many have experienced before.
This class will be full of beginner-friendly yoga, as well as providing many ways to deepen your practice and inspire your yogic mind!
