First things first, while there may be overlaps, Pilates is not yoga. In fact, unlike a yoga practice, the focus of Pilates is much more on the physical outcomes rather than the mental benefits. That’s not to say your mind won’t grow sharper and clearer, because it will. We’ll just be working extra hard into our muscles (mainly the core) to achieve strength, flexibility, and definition.
Pilates was invented by a guy called Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. The exercise regime was initially designed to be a rehabilitation program for soldiers injured in World War I. Many soldiers successfully regained their health and well-being by stretching, stabilising, and strengthening key muscles in their bodies through a select variety of highly controlled exercises.
Pilates is a whole-body exercise, described by Joseph Pilates as total body conditioning. Pilates emphasises proper alignment, control, precision, graceful movement, breath awareness, and concentration.
To achieve this total body conditioning, the core focus (no pun intended) of Pilates is, well, the core. The core refers to the area of your body between the shoulders and pelvis, and encompasses major muscles such as your pelvic floor, transverse abdominals, and your multifidus muscles.
Having a strong core as a foundation can improve everyday movements and positions – such as ensuring proper posture while sitting at work – and eliminate aches and pains in the back.
Zama’s Pilates classes in Brisbane and Toowoomba are a combination of the classic Pilates and contemporary Pilates. Our love for yoga might creep in too. We can’t help it!
The Benefits of Practicing Pilates in Brisbane or Toowoomba
The benefits of practicing Pilates are almost never-ending. Keep it up, and you’ll notice all kinds of wonderful things happening to your body and mind.
Want to know more? Check out these six benefits of practicing Pilates in Brisbane and Toowoomba.
1. Pilates is amazing for your abs
Forget sit-ups and crunches, if you want killer abs, Pilates is the answer. Pilates hits your core, and science backs it up. According to a Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise study, 36 weeks of Pilates training will strengthen your abs by a massive 20 per cent. What’s more, it’ll also even out imbalances between the left and right sides of your core. Hello perfect posture!
2. Pilates is safe on your joints
Get all the benefits of physical exercise without damaging your joints. The slow and controlled nature of Pilates tones and strengthens, and gets your heart racing without jarring actions or high-impact movements.
3. Pilates can minimise back pain
Did you know improving your core strength can help minimise back pain? Well, good news – as a core-busting exercise, Pilates can ease aches and pains in the back by improving your posture, rebalancing your muscles, and realigning your body. Plus, as Pilates improves your flexibility, you’ll enjoy a greater range of movement.
As you begin to strengthen your core, you’ll notice all other exercises become easier – not just ab work. Core strength can help you lift more, run further and faster, find better alignment in yoga, and more.
5. Pilates is an exercise for the body and the mind
Joseph Pilates titled his workout program ‘The Thinking Man’s Exercise’. What he should have said was Pilates is ‘The Thinking Human’s Exercise.’ There’s no denying the mental power it takes to perform the very precise, controlled movements Pilates demands. Studies have shown just how powerful Pilates can be, citing improvements in the brain’s alpha peak power, memory retention, and other cognitive functions after just 10 weeks of Pilates training.
6. Pilates makes you much more flexible… and fast
Never ever think you’re not flexible enough for Pilates – that’s the whole point. Pilates is a fantastic way to lengthen, relieve tension, and improve your flexibility. One study claimed that after 20 Pilates classes, subjects’ flexibility levels improved by almost 20 per cent!
