Anatomy & Alignment of Backbends with Sarah Smith
Saturday 7th March 2015
Backward bending poses (backbends) can be some of the strongest yoga poses you will encounter. Backbends promote mobility in the spine and help relieve back pain, while strengthening the back and stretching the front of the body. However, it is one of the most common mistakes when beginning yoga to bend the lower back, rather than bending backwards by opening the chest. According to The Medical Journal of Australia, a massive 80% of Australians experience back pain in their lifetime. The importance of learning to not only strengthen and stretch the back to avoid this chronic back pain, as well as using correct alignment to ensure no pain or injury occurs as a result of bending backward is critical.
During this master class, led by Sarah (who is part-way through her medical degree), you will explore a deeper awareness of the fundamental alignment require for a safe yoga practice when attempting backbending asanas. If you suffer from any kind of back pain, this master class is ideal for you to get some one-on-one guidance about you and your back individually in each of the poses. If you are a beginning yogi looking to expand your practice this master class will help you explore the beauty of safe backbending in a supportive environment. For experienced yogis, this will be an opportunity for you to reach the next level of your asana journey as you learn to deepen your backbending practice.
